Description
Containing both the old and the new, this recording features not only Béla Bartók’s 44 Duos but also all the existing original field recordings made in the early 20th century of the folk music that inspired them. The purpose of this compilation CD is to connect the listener to these original folk melodies. The field recordings appear here—for the first time together on one album—with permission from the varied sources that house them in Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary.
In placing the field recordings and Bartók’s compositions side by side, surprising details are revealed that are otherwise not evident from looking at Bartók’s score alone. Nuances in rhythm, expressive pitch, color, articulation, emphasis, language, and even humor abound. These rich elements have inspired and influenced our musical choices as performers, and they have helped us know the music better. We feel that anyone wishing to play these duos would benefit from access to the same inspiration.
