Description
Steve Lindeman was accepted into the BMI Composers Workshop where he was able to study for three years with the great Jim McNeely. During that time, Steve developed an original and creative style that is epitomized in the charts recorded on this album. CriticalJazz.com called the album “an impressive big band debut” and a “stellar coming out party for Lindeman.” “Steve Lindeman pushes the musical envelope of the traditional big band sound to places of three dimensional sonic depth rarely achieved from other large ensembles with a similar make up,” the review said.
“With this recording [Lindeman] makes a major statement. Now I can only ask: ‘What’s next?’ I’ll be listening!” said McNeely, himself a Grammy award-winning jazz pianist, composer, and arranger. Steve's music was very difficult to perform well and required a lot of woodwind doubling and sensitivity. Remarkably, this recording was made by Synthesis, Brigham Young University's premier jazz ensemble, recently named the “Top University Big Band in the Country” for 2013 by DownBeat Magazine. They are assisted by members of Q'd Up, BYU's Faculty Jazz Ensemble.
